Mugo Pine Caterpillars
Check your Mugo Pines! I've discovered that my young Mugo pine was covered with sawfly caterpillars! It's happened once before about 5 years ago and they are back. I noticed that some of the branches on my pine looked stripped but when I got closer it was infested with caterpillars. I remember the last time I had to rid my pine of them I had to manually remove them. It wasn't too bad because they all seem to stick together on the same branches and needles. They huddle 3 or 4 to a needle which makes it easier to remove them. When you get close to them they all snap into a defensive stance in unison. They may try to look scary but they seem pretty harmless. I got the majority off the first day then I would keep checking back and would remove any stragglers. It wasn't too bad on a small pine but I've seen them on huge pine trees too so I wouldn't know how to treat them! They do major damage in a short amount of time!! |

My uncle used to use a propane torch and cook them off.
